If you need a suggestion, we recommend preparing something upbeat, fun, and full of energy to match this musical vibe! We also ask that if you are interested in playing Toothless, Hicup, Astrid, Stoic or Grumbler, to prepare one of these monologues. The monologues are not mandatory (only if you wish to prepare one).
Auditions will take no more than 5 minutes in length.
Auditions will take place on Tuesday, September 1. An email with the audition schedule will be sent out in August.
Please email Kennedy at kennedy@merakitheatre.com with any further concerns or questions!
OPTIONAL MONOLOGUES FOR SPECIFIC CHARACTERS:
Hicup: Welcome to Brick. My village of vikings. It’s been here for generations, but every single building is new. We used to make our houses out of wood but those didn’t last very long. You'll see why in a second… or maybe you'll be able to guess the reason based on the title of this musical. You see, our village is an amazing place to live. The only problems are the pests. Some places have fish flies or cankerworms, but us? Yeah… we have dragons.
Grumbler (Blacksmith): There ya are, Hicup! I thought you’d have been carried off by a dragon. Come on, what sort of apprentice keeps running away from their apprent…ire? Yer s’possed to be learnin’ from me. Plus I'm kind of yer only friend seeing as none of the other kids really talk to ya. Hiccup, I'm gonna tell you something that's hard to hear but important, okay? You’ve got to stop trying to be something yer not
Toothless: Of course I can talk. You live in a town where you have to rebuild your homes 30 times a year and you're having a hard time understanding that dragons can talk? Nobody has ever asked us if we can talk. They usually just start throwing axes and arrows and I'm gonna be really honest here with you kid... conversation doesn't really tend to happen after that.
Astrid: Hey, I think the dragon went this way! Come on guys, it doesn’t matter who carries the bucket, one of you needs to USE that bucket to put out the fires. You’ve got to be kidding me. And now you’ve dumped the water all over the place. (Pause) Well what are you waiting for? Someone’s gotta go get more water! The fires aren’t going to put themselves out! (Pause) Aaaaand they forgot the bucket. Perfect.
Stoic: (Bellowing) HICUP! (More sincere) There’s my boy. I didn’t mean to startle ya. Well guess what, son? You got your wish! Your dragon training starts tomorrow morning, bright and early. (Pause) Well I thought you’d look more excited than that. Come on. You’re finally going to be a dragon killer just like your father. I’m so proud of you, son.
